Good morning,

I turned 66 this week, and I've been thinking more and more about the concept of reinvention.

I've been working for almost 50 years with more pivots than I can count. But over the last five years, I've noticed that there's a growing reinvention industry now, targeting midlife women and the glossy promise that a better you is waiting just past this one.

The part that exhausts me: We're sold two stories at the same time. Accept yourself as you are, and here's an endless menu of procedures, coaching, and woo-woo retreats to fix you.

The question I've learned to ask isn't "Should I change?" It's "Where is this urge coming from?" Is it knowing myself by feeling a real pull toward something, or is it exhaustion or boredom? Do I need to blow up my life, or quiet the noise around the one I already have? For me, moving into media was never a reinvention. It was recognition that I needed equal parts building and creating. PROVOKED wasn't a new me.

That's the verdict I kept coming back to in my article this week as I put the words "it's too late" on trial, one piece of my life at a time. And it's the exact question at the heart of the book we're launching for our new book club. Jane Green, whose novels many of us have been reading for 20 years, blew up the life everyone expected her to keep. She left a marriage and started over. In her memoir Rewilding, she asks the same thing I've been circling all week: When a woman changes everything, is she running away, or finally coming home to herself?

🏙️ New York City health officials are tracking a Legionnaires' cluster on the Upper East Side—23 cases, 17 hospitalizations across Carnegie Hill and Yorkville (ZIP codes 10028, 10128, and 10075), with a rooftop cooling tower the likely culprit. The symptoms read like summer flu: cough, fever, aches, shortness of breath, showing up anywhere from two days to two weeks after exposure. Being 50 or older is itself a risk factor. If you've been in those ZIP codes lately or have been strolling through Central Park and have a "summer cold" that won't quit, it's worth a phone call, not a wait-and-see.

🍓 A nasty stomach parasite is surging across the Northeast, and the case counts aren't subtle. Michigan, which normally logs about 50 cases of cyclosporiasis a year, has recorded 681 since late June; New York State is up to 112 cases outside the city, most since May. The culprit is Cyclospora, spread through contaminated produce—raspberries, basil, and pre-washed salad mixes are the repeat offenders. Here's the catch: It doesn't show up on the standard stomach-bug test, so if diarrhea drags past three to five days, you have to ask your doctor to look for it specifically. Wash your berries. And if you've been sick for a week, don't tough it out. Get the right test.
