We Have Some Questions

THIS WEEK: DOLLY • FEMALE CHEFS • ESTROGEN • FITNESS FADS • BEAUTY

THURSDAY • AUGUST 27 • 2026

Good morning,

I was 20 when 9 to 5 came out, still in college, studying to be an engineer at a maritime college where I spent my days in uniform surrounded mostly by men. I was blonde and buxom, preparing to enter a profession that looked nothing like me. I already knew people made assumptions about how smart I was. I thought my job was to prove them wrong.

Or so I thought.

Dolly Parton didn't believe she had to become less feminine to be taken seriously. The mile-high hair stayed. The boobs, the rhinestones, the laugh, all stayed. She didn't shrink. She leaned into it and let the rest of the world catch up.

I watched her refuse to explain or apologize, and something shifted in me. She built an empire and gave generously. Nobody got to decide that the package mattered more than the woman inside it.

That was the permission I didn't know I needed.

My own dreams felt more possible.

Everybody loved Dolly. I can't remember another celebrity of this era who had such universal adoration. Women and men. Left and right. People who loved country music and people who didn't. At a time when it feels like we can turn almost anyone into a reason to choose sides, Dolly managed to belong to all of us while staying true to herself. She redefined femininity on her terms and taught the rest of us to do the same.

This week, PROVOKED is asking some of the same questions Dolly answered her whole life: Why do women get treated differently from men in the same kitchen? Why do we treat our bodies like endless projects? Why do we think beauty requires erasing ourselves?

Dolly knew better. She occupied all the space she wanted, in exactly the form she wanted. She turned being underestimated into power.

Dolly knew the answer.

She lived it.

WELLNESS

Should Your Vaginal Estrogen Double as Skincare?

BY MICHELE ROSS

It started with Botox and salmon sperm serums, and now women are asking where to get vaginal estrogen for their faces before anyone asks whether they should. The surprising science, the very real gaps in it, and why an entire generation is still improvising around a decision made in 2002.

CULTURE

The Women Are in Your Kitchen. The Men Own the Building.

BY JENNIFER GREEN

Women have always been expected to cook with love. Men have been allowed to cook with ambition. That difference has shaped the food world for generations, from the television kitchen to the Michelin-starred dining room. The women who changed what America eats, and why the culture has been so reluctant to hand them the keys.

TAKE NOTE

Timely and worth your attention.

🧠 The HRT story keeps changing. Two new studies are adding evidence to one of the biggest unresolved questions in women's health: Could hormone therapy help protect our brains? In one, women who used HRT after surgical menopause had a 32% lower risk of Alzheimer's; another found fewer signs of Alzheimer's in the brains of women who had taken estrogen. Neither proves HRT prevents dementia, and experts say we're not there yet. But after decades of being told mostly about the risks, this is worth watching. We went deep on how one critically flawed study scared a generation of women away from HRT.

📱 Meta just agreed to an $18 billion reckoning over kids and social media. The landmark settlement with nearly every state ends claims that Facebook and Instagram deliberately used addictive features that harmed children's mental health. The changes may matter as much as the money: two-hour daily limits for minors unless parents override them, no push notifications during school hours, stronger age checks and fewer social-comparison features like visible “like” counts. And here's the twist: about $5.3 billion of the settlement is tied to YouTube and TikTok adopting similar protections.

🎤 The MTV Video Music Awards nominations are out, and guess who leads them? Madonna, 68, with 11. She’s now been nominated in every decade of her career, and a sweep would tie her with Beyoncé and Taylor Swift for the most VMA wins ever. As for Taylor, she follows Madonna with the second-most nominations, with nine. If she takes home even one award, she'll become the most-awarded artist in VMA history.

A Protein Bar That Doesn’t Taste Like a Compromise

It’s 3 p.m. and you need something more substantial than almonds, but the protein bar in the bottom of your purse isn’t exactly calling your name.

Most are dry, overly sweet, and full of ingredients you can’t picture in an actual kitchen. You eat one because you’re hungry enough to overlook all of that, not because you expect to enjoy it. After enough disappointing bars, I stopped buying them.

So when Lineage Provisions sent a box, I was skeptical, but I personally test every product from our sponsors before we put it in front of you. I opened the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough bar expecting the same familiar dry, powdery finish.

Instead, it was soft, dense, and fudge-like, with rich chocolate chips and a little honey coming through. It delivers 20 grams of protein from grass-fed whey and collagen, with raw honey, coconut nectar, and grass-fed tallow on the ingredient list. There are no seed oils, sugar alcohols, gums, fiber syrups, artificial sweeteners, or “natural flavors.” Lineage also posts third-party testing results for contaminants.

This is the first protein bar I’ve finished without wishing I’d packed almonds instead.

Before Biohacking, We Were Sweatin' to the Oldies

BY ABBY HEUGEL

Jane Fonda had leg warmers. Richard Simmons had sequins. Suzanne Somers had a spring-loaded contraption prone to shooting across the room. Now our watches can score our sleep and judge our choices. What we gained between Sweatin’ to the Oldies and the wellness dashboard—and what got left behind.

READER SPOTLIGHT

“Great article. I’m pretty lazy and reasonably low-maintenance. When I got a promotion I ‘treated’ myself to a cut and color. Horror at the bill greatly outweighed the pleasure I felt looking in the mirror. Thank you beyond words for the excellent journalism of PROVOKED. I feel seen, heard, acknowledged, and supported by women of a certain age!” —Phyllis on Is Your Beauty Routine Eating Into Your Retirement?

DEAR READER | LIFE

Jolie Laide Saved Me Once. Can It Save Me Again?

BY LESLIE VOORIS

At 12, “interesting-looking” can feel like a life sentence. By midlife, it may be the thing you’re most afraid of losing. We’ve spent decades trying to make peace with the faces that made us stand out. Then comes the question nobody prepares us for: What if perfection makes us less ourselves?

OUR SHORT LIST

💊 Exercise in a pill sounds like science fiction. A new drug is making the idea a little less far-fetched.

💔 More Americans are choosing distance from their families. The reasons behind the trend aren't quite what you might expect.

📺 Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman, and women running the show. Lioness is back for Season 3 on Paramount+.

🍰 Why is it so much harder for some of us to resist sweets? New brain research offers a surprising clue.

The glow lotion I use every single day—sheer enough to feel like nothing and makes you look like you slept for 12 hours.

Most Supplements Skip a Step

Here’s the part I didn’t understand: a probiotic without fiber has nothing to live on. It can pass straight through without ever settling in. That’s the thinking behind LYMA ID². Four fibers come first, then the probiotic, protected omega-3, and clinically dosed vitamins and minerals—each ingredient arriving when the gut is better positioned to use it.

Most supplements are a collection of ingredients. This one is built in an order.
