You've Been Doing It Wrong Since 1978

THIS WEEK: NOSTALGIA • YOUR GUT • CAREGIVING • TAKING THE STAGE

THURSDAY • AUGUST 20 • 2026

Good morning,

Rewilding is an ecological term. You take land that's been managed, cultivated, and kept, then you stop managing it. You let it come back to what it was before anyone decided what it should be.

Author Jane Green applied that word to herself at 55: a marriage that looked warm from the outside, a life gone airless, a suitcase, a one-way ticket to Marrakech.

That's why we started with Jane for our first book club.

And you showed up on a weekday, with questions written in advance and more coming in through the chat. One reader, 72 and divorcing, asked what this looks like at her stage. Another told us her tombstone should read, "I'm not done yet."

Books are how we find out we're not the only one. Last Wednesday, we got to find that out together.

Next month's pick is coming soon, with other events for PROVOKEDplus members on the horizon.

Also this week: Sharon takes a national ballroom title at 64 in a red sequined dress. Michelle O'Neil on what caregivers carry as they age. Your gut and your 3 a.m. dread. And me, undone by a Billboard chart from 1978.

CULTURE

The Week I Met Him, the Commodores Were No. 1

BY SUSAN DABBAR

A song can put you back in another decade before the first chorus is over. The year—1978. The music from when you were becoming yourself doesn't loosen its grip as you age. It tightens. And that warm feeling? Not a metaphor.

Plus, we made you a playlist. 🎧

WELLNESS

Blame Your Gut

BY LAURA FRASER

That low-grade anxiety that shows up when nothing is actually wrong? It may not be only in your head at all. The gut and brain are talking constantly, and menopause can complicate the conversation. You may have been blaming the wrong organ.

TAKE NOTE

Timely and worth your attention.

🧬 Moderna and Merck announced this week that their personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, given with Keytruda, significantly improved outcomes for people with high-risk melanoma after surgery, helping keep the cancer from returning or spreading compared with Keytruda alone. It’s the first positive Phase 3 result for a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine. It isn't FDA-approved yet, and researchers are still following patients for overall survival. But this is one to watch.

🧊 We’ve been icing sprained ankles since 1978. Turns out, we may have been doing it wrong. RICE—the old advice to rest, ice, compress, and elevate—is falling out of favor. Movement is increasingly in, and that swelling you’ve been trying to stop may actually be part of the healing process. Ice can still help with pain, but experts say inflammation helps deliver the cells needed for repair. The newer advice has a rather charming name: PEACE and LOVE.

📺 Netflix has adapted Miles Franklin's My Brilliant Career, and Sybylla Melvyn is still the most inconvenient woman in Australian literature—a young writer being groomed for marriage who would rather write her own life than be handed one. Franklin published it in 1901 at 21, and then spent decades refusing to let it be reprinted. All six episodes are streaming now. Some women have always been too much.

Six things. I've used every one of them.

There's nothing like the panic of leaving the house for a trip and realizing your makeup bag is on your vanity. I'm not interested in going barefaced anymore, and I've spent a lifetime figuring out what works for me and what works in a pinch. Drugstore beauty is where most of us started, and thankfully those products have grown up alongside us. CVS has all of it, wherever you land.

Right now, CVS is offering $10 off $30+ during its Fall Epic Beauty Event Aug. 16–29.

Prep first. No point putting makeup on skin that isn't ready, so I start with my go-to for sensitive skin, La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair.

Then sun. Always, no exceptions: Blue Lizard SPF 50 Sunscreen.

Even it out. One layer, tone and hydration, with L'Oréal True Match Hyaluronic Tinted Serum.

Now the fun part. A few swipes of Milani Volumizing Tubing Mascara and I look awake, whatever the flight did to me.

Double duty. e.l.f. Cream Blush Stick in muted mauve goes on cheeks, then lips. One stick, two jobs, no brushes.

And the undo. Neutrogena Makeup Remover Towelettes for the night you get in late and still have tomorrow to face.

LIFE

Caregivers of a Certain Age

BY MICHELLE O'NEIL

Parents aren't supposed to hope they outlive their children. But for aging caregivers of adult children with special needs, the alternative can be more frightening. What happens when a lifetime of caregiving collides with the reality of getting older?

READER SPOTLIGHT

“You know how you will sometimes read something that is so exactly spot-on that you just nod your head, groan in recognition, and laugh out loud like you are having an actual lived experience, not just reading words on a page? This is that. This is so 100% that. Thank you!” —Charity on When Did My Husband Become the Hot One?

The Most Fun You Can Have With Your Clothes On

BY SHARON MACEY

Latin ballroom after 60 comes with 2.5-inch heels, false eyelashes, sequins, and a spray tan that reaches places you didn't authorize. At 64, she made it to the final round at Nationals. Then the announcer started counting down.

OUR SHORT LIST

😴 This may be the most unexpected idea for treating insomnia yet. Early research suggests a rather unconventional pill could help.

🍷 Who says assisted living has to mean giving up happy hour? One Minnesota grandmother decided to do something about it.

📺 Some great shows get canceled. Others simply get overlooked. These 50 underappreciated shows deserve another chance.

🧠 All those little choices add up and your brain may be paying the price.

👞 These suede loafers have barely left my feet. Cozy enough to wear around the house, cute enough to leave it, with those little summer charms that might look familiar. Runs true to size, and yes, I already ordered another pair.

Stake Your Day is a woman-founded newsletter devoted to the small objects, songs, stories, and cultural touchstones that keep calling us back. If this week's trip to 1978 sent you down a rabbit hole, this one is worth following.

Here's the update I promised.

A month in and it's the one thing on my counter that I'm not taking out of guilt. I'm a green tea person, never coffee, but tea has never given me the energy you coffee people get. This does. I still love the taste, which is saying something from a woman who won't go near anything that tastes like grass. And the bloating that had become more or less permanent at 66 is almost gone.

The short version: Your gut runs on a sequence, and most supplements ignore it. LYMA ID² doesn't.

See what's in it.
