Good morning,

Something has changed in the freelance economy.

Over the past year, I've interviewed, talked with, or hired more than 50 freelancers: writers, editors, designers, marketing experts, engineers, and artists.

Freelancing has become a much harder way to make a living, especially for writers and creatives. I've depended on freelancers for decades as I've built businesses, but lately the market has shifted in a way I've never seen. Every conversation leaves me feeling two things at once: inspired by the talent and a little indignant that a market this full of it has become so difficult to survive in.

I'm proud that PROVOKED is hiring, and that we can pay people fairly for their work, because the talent is real and it deserves to be.

Once in a while I catch myself saying I'm a one-woman newsroom, and in the literal sense it's true. I'm writing this alone at my dining room table, pulled up to the same ugly Herman Miller ergonomic chair every day. But that's not the whole story.

There is a deep bench behind this publication: editors, writers, artists, and the people who've been with me long enough to know what PROVOKED should sound like when I lose the plot for a hot minute. I don't get this out the door every week without them.

And then there's you.

🎶 Carly Simon, 83, revealed Monday that she's living with Parkinson's, a disclosure that came after what she called her "relative silence" and a stretch out of public view that also included joint replacements and skin cancer treatment. Nearly 90,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson's every year, and the risk climbs sharply after 65. She said Parkinson's is not a gift or a blessing, and that it's difficult and sometimes frightening. And in the same breath, a new album is in the works.

👠 Gird your loins: it's finally here. The Devil Wears Prada 2 is streaming now on Disney+ and Hulu, reuniting Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci nearly 20 years after the original. It was a hit at the box office, bringing in more than $688 million worldwide, pushing the franchise past $1 billion. And the premise is almost too on the nose for us: a movie about aging women, dying media, and refusing to be counted out.

🩸 A new study of more than 22,000 women just upended the standard picture of endometriosis. Drawn from the NIH's All of Us database, it found patients don't cluster around one set of symptoms; they cluster around four distinct patterns, some driven by pelvic pain, others by gut problems, migraines, anxiety, or depression. A disease that affects one in 10 women and still takes four to 11 years to diagnose. The takeaway isn't that women imagined it. It's that medicine has been calling four different things by one name.
